“I wondered if it would’ve been too subtle to wear a T-shirt that said thank you for your interest, but I am no longer dating. I knew Todd, wasn’t a huge fan of reading, but he did like to stare at my shirts.”

In The Lonely Hearts Club, boy trouble never seems to stop following Penny Lane (yep! she is named after a Beatles song). And just when she thought she had found the right guy – he screws up!! Devastated and heartbroken, Penny is certain that all guys are one and the same. They use girls and then get rid of them when a new one walks by. In the heat of the situation, she forms a club. The Lonely Hearts Club, a very apt name for a club which gives solace to all the lonely hearts in McKinley High. Everything in life has both pros and cons. But are the pros of this club worth the sacrifice that Penny eventually will have to make?

I liked this book but only as a one time read. It was well written and the humour, fights, drama filled situations were all very entertaining. But it was sort of predictable from the beginning. In my opinion, there is nothing new to this book except for the club-forming part. I guess the only reason, I didn’t give it a 5 star rating was because, I have read many books following the same concept. Girl loves boy, boy breaks her heart, girl is very glum, soon she realizes she has already fallen for someone else.
Nonetheless, its wonderful to see how girl power rises to drown boy related issues. The influence that broken hearted Penny Lane has on the other girls in school is fantastic! They all look up to the one leader, who has had enough and decides to speak up against this injustice done to them by the boys. However the boys (who are now unable to trap girls) have something else entirely, to say about Penny’s ideas. The main characters are all typical high school students. Hyper, love-struck, fashion concious. I felt bad for Penny when she was sort of pulled in opposite directions, because of what she did and the kind of impact that had on other people in school.Genuine people, who don’t deserve to be categorized just because of what a few did wrong. All in all its a fun read! You should give it a try.

Rating – 4 stars
